Its moi, Moy-Moy!

Hi every dog and cat! Do you know that today is Monday? And that Monday is for me, MOY-MOY? As you can see, last night, the evil Petparrazzi took photos of me like I was digging for a bone or something--I was composing my very first post, doggit!

I hurt my paws real bad beating my deadline (which is my bed time), but i get distracted by my sister Pussy, who is a cat and a very jealous one at that. You see, Pussy had been begging The Secretary whom she calls Mum (okay, whatever) for a blogging day ( just like mine which is Monday) but was denied for obvious reasons ( she kept biting the mouse!).

I may have taken her sermons and her non stop ramblings of so called rules I had to follow in the house ( like not drinking on her water bowl, not eating on her food bowl, not chasing after her tail) like a good boy-pup that I am. But I say, enough is enough!

"I cannot blog about you, not in my very first post!" I barked.

Little did I know, this verbal tussle with my sister would turn to be my earliest educational experience. A painful one.

Lesson Number 1: Never, I say never, argue with a jealous cat.

Thanks to the Secretary who gave me her shoulder to cry on. I must have looked like a wimp, but who said it was bad for boy-pups to cry?

What happened with this dog's willie?

Oh-oh. This morning, The Animal Doctor found himself one very hot doggy.

This poor doggie's willie had been hanging out like that for more than 24 hours. His owner was mortified, and quick to assure us that NO, he was not keeping viagra tablets that the dog might have accidentally ingested.

He may be telling the truth. This is but a case of a dog with Paraphimosis, or a distended glans penis that has not retracted to its normal position in the prepuce for one reason or another ( a narrowed preputial opening or trauma to the penis). This can also occur during mating, when the hair around the preputial orifice gets tangled like a band around the base of the penis, thus preventing retraction.

However, hair constriction at the base of the penis is more common in long haired breeds (like shih tzus). Instead, what we have with our patient is an inflamed glans penis, possibly caused by bacterial infection. Due to its current swollen state, it is virtually impossible to maneuver the dog's penis back into the preputial cavity. Dipping it in ice cold dextrose solution did not help at all.

The Animal Doctor already instituted anti-biotic and anti-inflammatory treatment plus Nefrotec to brace our patient for a urinary tract infection lurking somewhere. Surgilube, a surgical lubricant containing a bactericidal gel called Chlorhexidine, is also proving to be very useful.

So far, our patient has good appetite and is being a good boy himself by not fiddling with his Paraphimosis. Catheter can pass through and urine is clear. Except for unsightly blood oozing from the inflamed organ, the dog does not seem to be in pain.

We hope this resolves in 3 days or less.

Asong Pinoy A-Visiting

Wow, we had asong pinoy visiting our clinic today!

These are Maximus, Lightning and Thunder Briones. They came for deworming, vaccination and check up. Maximus ( middle) got a new collar. Unlike Moy-Moy, they are not true blue native dogs as they were sired by a labrador.

These are Monay ( with brown spots) and Angel ( light brown) San Juan. They came for a medical check up. Their tummies are no good, they've been having watery poopies and have not been eating much for the last two days.

These dogs are very lucky to have caring and responsible humans, because not a lot of Aspins ( asong pinoy) are as lucky. Aside from chronic neglect, they also suffer torture and violence from the hands of humans engaged in dog meat trade which is a lucrative underground business in the Philippines.

Dogs by the thousands are hog tied, with rusty sardine cans stuck up their snout, and dumped in vans and trucks that transport them to Benguet and nearby provinces where they are slaughtered. In such a deplorable and appalling state, some of the dogs die of asphyxiation during transit.

The law that prohibits the slaughter of dogs does not expressly prohibit eating its meat, so people can technically buy dog meat and cook it as pulutan or serve it as an exotic dish in their restaurants without violating the law.

The recently enacted Rabies Act of 2007 prohibits and penalizes the trade of dog meat. But still, not the act of eating. For as long as consumption of dog meat is not penalized, there will always be a motivation for dog meat traders to be on top of their game.

Good Bye, Chi-Chi

We are on a somber mood tonight. We got word that Chi-Chi has crossed the Rainbow Bridge. Chi-Chi, a two year old shih tzu had been in and out of our clinic for the past three months due to renal disease. She always managed to pull out of it, becoming her old self again in no time. But this last time was just too much for Chi-Chi's poor little body.

Chi-Chi was blessed with the love and commitment of her human family. In the end, they opted to take her home, to be with her during her last moments.

Don't Grieve for Me

Don't grieve for me, for now I am free.

I'm following paths God made for me

I took his hand, I heard him call...

Then turned, and bid farewell to all.

I could not stay another day

To laugh, to love, to sing, to play.

Tasks left undone must stay that way

I found my peace...at close of day.

Who is Moy-Moy, Nobody's Boy?

We are horrible. After the lavish introduction of our crew ( please check the sidebar) we forgot to mention Moy-Moy!

Moy-Moy is a true blue Asong Pinoy. Only two months old, he is training hard for a special mission. You see, native dogs and cats do not enjoy the same stature as their purebred brothers and sisters in the Philippines. The double standard cuts across race, sex, social classes in that it pervades even the world of domesticated animals!

A typical pinoy household would have a pampered pooch ( a pure or mix breed) who stays indoors, sleeps on the sofa, feeds on premium pet food, and forks over thousands of pesos for vanity alone. Then there's the ubiquitous askal or asong kalye, who stays outdoors, steadfastly guarding his master's house day and night. Not a lot of people see the need or importance of providing these dogs their basic needs-- food, shelter, quality health care.

It is our mission to convince our clients and as many people as we can, that all animals, regardless of breed, pedigree or market value, deserve love and compassion from humans; and Moy-Moy is the perfect poster boy for our advocacy.

The Secretary : So how did you apply for work at Greenwoods Pet Clinic?

Moy-Moy : I didnt. One day I woke up and Im here! !!

(Note by the Animal Doctor: Moy-Moy was abandoned by his owners in a shoebox outside Greenwoods Pet Clinic when he was only a wee puppy. His eyes were still tightly shut; I actually got The Secretary ( who already took pity on him) to believe that Moy-Moy was blind and had to be euthanized! Hehehe. I was only kidding. What it told us was that Moymoy had been born just a few days or weeks and may have been prematurely weaned from the dam. And so, the Secretary scampered off to buy a puppy feeding bottle, and in no time, reactivated her maternal instincts.

As a matter of fact, during his first two weeks in our clinic, Moy-Moy drifted in between feeding and sleeping mode.

Our good friend, Cystal ( Marshall's Mommy) was very kind to take Moy-Moy in when we went to Iloilo to be with our human son (H.S) for the christmas break. Look how Moy-Moy have grown up so quickly when we came back.

Secretary : So tell us about your work.

Moy-Moy : I eat, sleep, and play in the morning and when i get tired in the evening, maybe I sleep some more???

( Note from the Animal Doctor: Er, ... right now we are exposing him to different forms of stimulation, like children, noise, and even the presence of dogs and other animals. When he came back after his christmas vacation with Crystal, we were suprised that he was house broken and knew where to drop his poop. When clients come with their dogs, we bring out Moy-Moy and tell them how we are taking care of him and how we are raising him up to be a well mannered dog. We have a lot of plans for Moy-Moy. In a few months, he will be neutered----

The Animal Doctor : As neutering( removal of testicles in male dogs) eliminates the desire to mate in male dogs, unwanted pregnancies in pets are prevented,so humans only get to have as many pets their time, space and resources will allow them. Given the benefits to pets, health and behavior wise, neutering and spaying ( removal of ovaries in female dogs) is an essential part of responsible pet ownership.

Fluffy, the substitute pet

The Secretary has lived in many places away from home. Loneliness gave her the uncanny ability for striking friendships with just about any dog nearby her rented space, be it the landlord's dog or the neighbors. In exchange for yummy leftovers and plenty of hugs, these dogs are game enough to substitute as her pet.

This is Fluffy, becoming all sweet and cuddly for some tasty dinner leftovers.

Marshall, the Panty Raider

(Note from Greenwoods Pet Clinic: We were shocked to read about our client Marshall in the front pages of no less than The Philippine Daily Petquirir. Below is a verbatim quote of the news.)

"Oopps, I did it again" was all Marshall "The Golden Boy" Retriever could say when agents of the Canine Secret Investigation ( CSI) Manila arrested him on Monday.

The notorious canine was indicted for panty larceny in 2006 and was serving house arrest when he carried out what the Secretary of Justice considered as the dumbest underwear heist of the decade.

Mr. Retriever apparently left a piece of evidence so damning he was nailed before he could even finish chewing his loot.

CSI Agents raided Mr. Retriever's sprawling mansion at Greenwoods Executive Village, and found a cellphone containing an image of him with the stolen panty. DNA results of the drool found in the underwear disproved claims by Mr. Retriever's counsel that the cellphone image was a Photoshop fabrication.

Meanwhile, the CSI already refuse to disclose the owner of the stolen property, but confirmed to the Media that it was not Britney Spears'.

( The CSI Manila has tried to get in touch with Greenwoods Pet Clinic to confirm reports about Marshall's worsening panty addiction. The Animal Doctor, however, refused to divulge information, upholding confidentiality of veterinary-patient relationship. )

Dexter, the Toy Terminator

(Note: Amidst the debate on the proposed National I.D System that will undermine every citizen's constitutional right to privacy, Greenwoods Pet Clinic was stunned to learn that the Department of Defense had been conducting surveillance operation on one of our own!)

Subject is known to go berserk at the sound of a squeak toy.
Will pounce on the defenseless object and instantly de-squeak it.
Four victims in the last month:
Red Ball,
Blue Ball,
Mr. Duck, and
the Idiot who squeaked Mr. Duck directly into subject's ear.
