This afternoon, our cat* was mauled to death by our dogs Jappy and Bambi. She was approximately 4.
I am still trying to make sense of the violence that erupted in our household. The rational part of me would like to believe that no amount of care and affection can turn an animal other than what it is. In the concrete playground where they do their zoomies and play with their squeak toys, it is still the law of the jungle that operates.
Thing is, I could come up with a thousand justification, but nothing can ease the tight knot in my stomach, not seeing our cat in her usual spot tonight. She is gone forever.
* I named our cat, Pussy, not knowing that in certain parts of the world, her name had negative connotations. My apologies.
I cannot thank you enough ( you know who you are dear friends) for steadfastly supporting us in these challenging times.

This is just sad :( I would like to get mad at the dogs. But pointless as it is, they are just animals and react on their instincts. I just wish that Pussy could have been saved somehow.

We are so sorry to hear about this. Sometimes things happen and are left unexplained. We know how caring you are with your pets and it is harder to see incidents like this happen. We are thinking of you and we are sending you our love.

Oh, my dear friends. What a YEAR this is turning out to be for you. I hope things improve for you. How awful for you. My first dog killed my other pet (a mouse) when I was a little girl. It was awful - loving the dog, but hating her at the same time for killing another member of the household.
ReplyDeleteJasper has always made very clear his views on cats - but he would not wish Pussy's fate on any of them. Sometimes, dogs get carried away when "playing" their "games", because they can't understand the consequences of what they are actually doing, and hurt people or other animals by mistake. I expect Jappy and Bambi are very, very sorry that they have made you upset - even if they don't properly understand what they have done.
We shall remember Pussy in our prayers tonight. We think it's a lovely name for a cat - it's a shame that, like certain other words, it has been given another all-consuming meaning by folk with mucky minds.
Little Pussy is in a better place - away from pain and sorrow, and with all the cupboards she could ever wish to snooze on.

Oh, dear! We're so very sorry to read of the loss of your kitty, and under such terrible circumstances. Most dogs have a prey drive, and in some it is more easily triggered than in others. Don't know if you have other cats, but you may want to be sure they are not outside at the same time the dogs are playing. It just takes an instant for the prey drive to kick in. My female dog has a very strong prey drive and we cannot have cats in the house at all. Other dogs can live fine with a cat inside in a calmer, more controlled environment but cannot be trusted outside where a "chase" activity could be triggered. Again, deepest condolences.

ReplyDeleteI am so sorry to read about Pussy. I know how this feels, and this reminded me of one night when my sister went in between Demon the cat (her eldest son) and Papoo the dog. She got herself bitten by Papoo in the process, when she shielded her hand for Demon. Demon wasn't hurt at all, but Sis got some deep bite wounds. We know Papoo was sorry, and somehow thought that Demon was saying something to Papoo that provoked him to do something nasty; but then again, it's just the way it is.
